We are all blessed with memories of Fred

Fred and Barbi have been very dear friends of mine. When Fred was overseas working we all would stay in touch. I attended their heartfelt 20th anniversary - what a perfectly matched couple! Many times they would come stay overnight at my home in Carlsbad. We always had the most interesting conversations - at breakfast Fred stated, " Susie, this hotel only lacks one thing, TV's in every bedroom!" He had a wonderful sense of humor and was brilliant. I helped support Fred with special cards Tera would give him on his "Honor Flight." Other fond memories include our New Year's Eve dinners with Jan and Bob Kingaard. We are all blessed with the beautiful memories of Fred.

A truly special person to me

It's still so hard to believe Uncle Fred is gone. He was truly such a special person, and I know he'll be incredibly missed and remembered with so much affection by everyone who knew him.

I've been thinking about him quite a bit lately. I'll always carry with me the memory of his wonderful, confident presence – and that smooth, commanding voice of his. What I'll particularly cherish is the incredible wisdom and advice he always seemed to have ready. He really did have a knack for knowing just what to say, and I learned so much from him.

He's truly missed, more than words can say. Love, your nephew, Sean Hannum.

Fred Remembrance

As his sister, I was lucky. Lucky to grow up beside him.

Losing Fred leaves an ache that words can’t really fill. But even in the sadness, there’s gratitude — for the love he gave, for the steadiness he offered. His kindness, his patience, his quiet strength — those things live on in everyone who loved him.

Fred’s life was a gift to us all. And though I’ll miss his voice, his laughter, and his gentle way, I know that the love he gave doesn’t end here. It stays with us — in our hearts, in our stories, and in every moment we remember him.

Thank you, Fred, for being my brother — for every smile, every memory, every bit of love you left behind. You’ll always be with me.

Turning a mega-church into a family-church

I met Fred and Barbie during the early days of the Covid pandemic when Mariners Church created an outdoor worship center from a soccer field. As a new volunteer usher, I connected with Fred and Barbie each week at their regular seat on the westside of the stage. Their passion for the “Mariners Movement” confirmed my commitment to invest in the Mariners’ community. As a couple, they worshipped with authenticity and tuned the sermon to their heart. Fred was always quick with an inspiring story and a grin that turned to a chuckle. His gentle, sweet spirit will always stick in my mind. For me, Fred and Barbie turned a mega church into a family church.

I was Fred's home health nurse, and it was an honor and a pleasure to care for him while having the opportunity to get to know both Fred and Barbie more closely. Every time I visited, they made me feel so welcome, and over time, they became like family.

Throughout that time, Fred showed incredible courage, strength, and determination, despite setbacks and daily challenges. Even on the toughest days, he maintained a good attitude, a wonderful sense of humor, and a passion for life (and chocolate!). Seeing the way he faced each obstacle was inspiring.

Even though I care for many patients, he touched me in a unique way, and I will always value the time I spent with him. He will be deeply missed and I feel grateful to have known him.

Fred and Me

Fred and I were walking companions. Barbi introduced us and we became very good friends. At first we would walk together to the clubhouse near where we lived. It was a 10 to 15 minute walk for us. When we got there we sat on a bench and chatted for another 15 or 20 minutes and then walked back home. At first we talked about what we did when we worked. And I found out that he and Barbi spent many years as ex-pats. But it was a while before I found out what a high level Fred worked at. He liked to talk more about how remarkable Barbi was than about himself. But we eventually got to the point where we admired each others careers and accomplishments. Fred was a radioman on a destroyer and never forgot the time he spent on active duty. Then he became a bank auditor. I also spent time in the Navy and then went to work with a main frame computer company at the time when laptops were being introduced to the marketplace. Soon our talks turned to every day chit chat. We discussed politics once in a while. Fred was a Conservative and I a little bit to the right of Genghis Khan. We enjoyed our time together. Barbi would take us to different restaurants for dinner and I enjoyed the breadth of knowledge she had about Newport Beach. And on holidays like Armed Forces Day or July 4th she made arrangements for us to attend those events. Fred wore his ball cap with Navy on it and I wore the one they bought for me that said Retired Navy. On Armed Forces day she got us front seats at the event and the local celebrities came over and shook our hands and told us how much they appreciated our service. And she got us flags that were displayed among those that surrounded the venue and had our names and pictures. There came a time when we couldn’t make it to the club house anymore so we took our walks around our cul-de-sac. We became a well known sight. Two old men, one on a walker and the other using a walking stick. And we stopped traffic. No--- we actually stopped traffic. They had to wait for us to get out of their way. Fred was a good shipmate and I miss him.

Remembering Fred

Remembering Fred….

Fred was introduced to me when he and Barbi, my long time dear friend, married.
From that very beginning, I knew Fred was special and would be a good partner
for any and all the crazy, wonderful and out of the ordinary things of which Barbi would
make him a part! Fred was always a gentleman no matter where I saw him. He was
also quite the host at the beautiful celebrations of marriage that he and Barbi had at the Balboa Bay Club.
A proud American Veteran as well, and we were happy that he was able to attend the Celebrations in DC honoring him and his fellow American Vets.

Malone and I send our condolences to Barbi and all of his family.
We are pleased that we can attend his Celebration of Life!
